If you’ve recently decided to purchase your first trailer, you may be a bit overwhelmed by all the options available to you. While there are quite a few models on the market, none are quite as versatile as utility and cargo trailers! However, despite this one similarity, these trailers are actually quite different, and you’ll want to read our helpful article below to figure out which style of trailer is the right choice for you.

The Bed

The most obvious difference between these two trailers is their beds. A utility trailer has a completely open bed, or some minimal siding, to make tying down items a quick and easy process. On the other hand, cargo trailers have completely enclosed beds that allow you to quickly stack your items in such a way that you don’t necessarily need to secure them.

Towing

Using a cargo trailer comes with a certain level of protection. There’s no need to worry about snow or rain damaging your items, or having them fall out into the road. However, cargo trailers are taller and often heavier than utility trailers. As a result, they’re often much more difficult to tow and may require extra accessories such as sway bars and tow chains. Utility trailers on the other hand are lightweight, aerodynamic, and easy to haul.

Cargo

Generally speaking, these two trailers have similar uses, in that they both transport cargo. However, cargo trailers are often better suited for smaller items, as bulky freight often doesn’t fit through the back entry doors. Utility trailers on the other hand are easy to load up with bulky items and heavy equipment, as they have no walls or siding to get in the way. However, you risk losing smaller cargo on the road if you don't tie it down very carefully.
